BUBBLY flowed when Cape Town Mayor Patricia Kreiner removed a signboard warning against swimming at Mouille Point near the Green Point sewerage outfall.
The removal of the sign yesterday closely followed the completion of the entrenching of the sewerage pipeline into the floor of the ocean – and the message was clear – it’s safe to swim.
At a small function at Mouille Point, overlooking the area in question. Medical Officer of Health Michael Popkiss said: *It was done in ume, within budget and it works.”
The sewage is now discharged 1,7km away from the shore and even if the current should bring it back. it would be so diluted that it would pose no problem, he said.
“Come on in, the water’s fine,” he joked.
The mayor described the completion of the pipeline – which cost R20 million – as “mons-mental”.
The issue had been “very controversial” and not good for the city.
“I hope it’s now behind us. The pipeline will be a major contribution to tourism.”
